Being afraid of my kids not listening, or not liking the plan or request is often the reason why I’ll tiptoe around the rule/ request instead of being clear.

Instead of saying “it’s time to come in now, I need you guys to put the toys away and come inside”
I might ask “are you guys done playing yet? It’s getting so late! Look- it’s getting dark already!”

Notice in the second statement there was no rule, no request, no clarity of expectation.

When I’m not actually curious about whether or not they are done, and what I actually mean is that they NEED to come inside now, I create confusion and open the door for Negativity with my lack of clarity.

The kids pick up our energy. And feel like we are trying to manipulate or control them. (Intense kids will resist that at all costs)
Or they might believe us and innocently choose to stay out.

And then i get resentful that they didn’t “listen” when meanwhile i never asked them anything.

And I may even resort to shaming them into wanting what i want them to want.

“Guys, you’re gonna get sick if you stay out here, it’s getting too cold. And it’s scary out here in the dark. And how are you gonna get your homework done?”

All of these fear based manipulative questions that aren’t really what I want to know.

What I actually want is for them to somehow want what I want so I don’t have to be the “bad guy” making them do something they don’t want to do.

But guess what? Sometimes as the mom I am the bad guy. Cuz sometimes in life we have to do things we don’t want to do.
And it’s not optional.

And when I can own that, and be ok with them not liking it, or not liking me, or having big feelings about not having what they want, I can actually set them up for success by actually being clear and straightforward and staying honest about what the clarity is.

“Guys, it’s late. There’s no more play time. I need you guys to come in. Not soon, now. There’s no more time to play.”

I can start to recognize all movement in the right direction.

I don’t need to coddle or protect them.

They’ve got this.

Walking through “I don’t want to” from a 3 year old without negativity, sticking with clarity, and complete validation:

Me: mommy is going somewhere after bedtime tonight, so I’m gonna put you to bed now and then I’m gonna go.
3 yr old: but I’m not tired
Me: you’re not tired? That’s ok, you can just rest
3 yr old: but Im not tired!
Me: it’s ok to not be tired at bedtime. You can just lay on your pillow and rest. (Me lifting 3 year old and starting to walk to be)
3 year old: but I’m going to come out of bed
Me: ok. I’ll tell the babysitter to keep putting you back into bed if you come out.
3 yr old, tearing up: but I don’t want you to leave
Me ( while carrying her to brush her teeth I.e. schedule is non negotiable): awww you don’t want me to leave? That makes sense. I don’t want to leave either. I’m gonna miss you! Can I check on you when I get home?
3 yr old: ok

I feel like sometimes we inadvertently lose our clarity when our kids resist by getting into conversations of persuasion, bribes or threats.

It’s almost like we take them too seriously.

What if I can hear and validate their opinions without even opening the door of clarity being an option.

Unless it is a clear request from them to change something (like, “mommy, could I not go to bed till you come home?” Which would require a clarity answer, like “no”) when they don’t want something, it’s an invitation for empathy and understanding for the things in life we need to do that we don’t like doing.
It’s normal.
And it’s hard.
And if anything it means they are that more great for doing it anyway.

It doesn’t need to mean they are threatening the clarity or our authority.

It means they are being honest that they don’t like something.

The true transformation of nha happens because of honest, genuine authentic relationship rooted in the greatness of who people are.

Coming to an older child who can be aggressive and dangerous and speaking from the heart, admitting that you know that sometimes they do these horrible things, and how even though at those times, you sometimes yell or get mad or shame or punish, the truth is, you see through that.

You see them… and they are……(insert true greatness here)

It takes some deep heart work to really know who they are beyond all of that aggression.

But ultimately who they are is a powerful, important force of light in the world, and their aggression is an upside down expression of that very greatness.

When a parent can see/feel this for real, from their heart, and can invest and invest and invest in that relationship, change can happen.

I’ve been working on resetting myself to the current moment and it’s been so grounding.

Like my NHA friend Nara says, “be where my feet are”.

Yesterday it was while I was brushing my teeth in the morning. I found myself running through everything that needed to happen next- once I walked through the door of the bathroom back out to the world.

I reset to the moment. I’m brushing my teeth now. This is the purpose of this moment.
Now.
I brought my attention and experience to the sensation in my mouth, to the peace that a lone moment with a locked door brings, to the gift of time and pause.
I was so much more ready for the “do’s” after I remembered to “be”.

Today I had the same experience driving to carpool pick up.

I brought myself back from everything waiting on the lists and noticed where I was.
Driving.
Going to see my kids. What a gift.
Changed everything

Ask yourself:
What am I really wanting?
Why is it important?

Don’t worry about grammer, spelling or making sense. Just let your conscience pour onto the paper.

What is one big and bold OR small and meaningful step I can take to move towards what I am wanting?

Writing allows for our minds to flow in a way that can’t happen when our thoughts are inside our heads.

I don’t like when I go through my day as best as I can, and I am met with a list of what I haven’t done right, or what I should have done better.

It leaves me feeling invisible and frustrated. “Can’t they see anything good I did do?!? Doesn’t anything I do count?”

Guess what, our kids feel the same way....

Let them know at the end of a day, or task, or experience, what they did right, and how them being them brought value to the experience.

Show them they are needed and wanted in the world now, and they won’t need to search for that answer when they are grown.

Here’s a great intention: “my needs come first”

Like on the plane, my mask before the child’s....
So much of my lack of calm comes when I myself have needs (like hunger or bathroom) that aren’t filled.
I can teach my kids this lesson too, by saying it out loud “I am hungry too so as soon as I have something to eat myself, I will be sure to get you x,y,&z”
“And thank you for your patience and understanding! I know it’s so hard to wait...”
Another interesting byproduct of this mentality, is suddenly kids become a lot more capable and independent because they don’t want to wait! 😂
And then we get to show up for those great qualities and energize their independence with the energy we got from filling our own needs first!
What a great cycle 😉

Here’s the nha®️ way to look at it:

What does it say about me that I have a huge headache *and* only yelled a little?

Or

I have a stressful meeting today and am not ready *and* didnt hit, push, or yank anyone getting ready for school?

Or:

I’m running late *and* still made myself a coffee and healthy breakfast?

The situations don’t change, but the warrior like determination to focus on the AND, the grains of good in however it could have been worse and wasn’t, or the small success even in the biggest failure, this determination changes fate, transforms lives, and has the power to give you not only good days, but great days, filled with meaning, purpose, joy, and pride every day.

When a child has big emotions and acts out in ways that are against the rules, do you really think they don’t know better?

Lecturing our kids about what they did wrong is patronizing and minimizing of their maturity and brains.

They know, we don’t need to tell them.

And if we really think they don’t know, then it’s on us to make new rules, not their fault.

A tantrum or inappropriate behavior is normal for humans, especially little ones.

It’s normal for humans not be perfect.

Talk less, give space, show trust, and know they will eventually come back.
And when they do, let them know how wonderful it is that they have.

Big emotions are hard for everyone!

Take the time to keep the kids in the loop.
Share expectations of where, when, and what they will be doing or not doing.
And what they can or can’t expect from you.
What should they do when you are otherwise occupied?
The more clear the expectations, the smoother the experience for everyone!

Bottom line, humans seek connection, and a primary attachment figure.

When we don’t have it, we try harder, sometimes at the expense of our own emotional well-being.

Our kids do the same thing, and they would rather be seen and in trouble, than feel invisible and be “good”.

I want to see them and give them the connection they crave, as a top intention for every day I live, and let them know thereby, that they don’t need to act out, to get their needs for attachment met.

Today my intention is to make an effort to really be there with them, before they need to ask for it.

What is my role as a mother?

I don’t get to decide what kind of kids I’ll get.
And I don’t get to decide who they will be when they grow up.
And I don’t even get to decide who they are right now.
So what is my role?

I have been learning on this NHA®️ journey, that my role as a mother, and really as a human on this planet, is not to force reality into being the reality that I believe would be best.
It’s not to manipulate or coerce or beg or plead with anyone or anything to be what I feel they or it should be.

What if my role was just to show up?

To show up in any given moment, living by and being the values that I want to see in the world and others.

What if my role as a mother was the feelings and behaviors that I add to the moment by being in control of my own emotional regulation, and what and where I choose to energize and celebrate by ways of my own intensity?

Can being intentional in where and how I shine my light be enough?

I say yes.

Today I will be intentional of where and how I shine my light and love of a mother. ❤️💕💞
